Firmware tables and ACPI

Firmware supplies platform information that the operating system cannot discover from a connector alone. ACPI is one standardized way to describe components, power relationships, and control methods used in managing the machine.

How the pieces connect

Tables can identify resources and express relationships among devices. Some methods communicate with an embedded controller or provide a standardized interface to platform-specific behavior. The operating system interprets this information alongside bus discovery. Firmware, hardware, and operating-system device assistance must agree about the available controls; a software package cannot create a physical capability that is absent.

An everyday example

A laptop lid switch and battery interface may be described through platform firmware even though they are not accessories attached to an external port. Their inventory names can therefore look quite different from a printer or mouse. The distinction reflects the source of their description, not a lower level of importance to everyday operation.

Reading the information in context

A firmware version and a device-package version identify different software layers. Updating one does not imply that the other has changed, and procedures vary by model. This page explains the relationship rather than providing flashing instructions. For firmware-specific operations, rely on the computer maker's reference guidance and the exact system identifier, not a superficially similar board name.
