Disks, volumes and file systems

The storage space visible to an application is organized through several layers above the physical medium. A disk, a partition, a volume, and a mounted file system each describe a different part of that organization.

The bigger picture

Partition information divides addressable space, logical-volume arrangements can combine or represent storage, and file systems organize names and content. The operating system then exposes mount points or drive letters for applications. Counts at these different layers do not need to match because the relationships are not always one-to-one.

A file manager intentionally presents a simpler view than a storage-management tool. Neither view alone explains every physical device or reserved region. The following topics are read-only conceptual references. They do not provide formatting, partition deletion, initialization, or recovery instructions. Understanding the labels before acting is particularly important because management operations can change how existing data is accessed.

Storage

Note these before you change anything

Useful facts to have to hand while reading about disks, volumes and file systems.

  • A current backup before any change
  • Controller mode in firmware: AHCI, RAID or NVMe
  • Storage controller driver name and version
  • Drive health shown by the maker's own diagnostics

Storage: Reading and writing data
