The Windows graphics model

The Windows Display Driver Model, commonly called WDDM, defines relationships among graphics components, the operating system, and applications. It supports responsibilities such as scheduling and memory management rather than naming a particular graphics processor.

How the pieces connect

The model includes boundaries between user-mode and kernel-mode work. Windows coordinates shared resources so applications can submit graphics tasks without owning the entire device. Revisions of the model add or change supported mechanisms, while individual hardware and software implementations determine which features are available in a specific system configuration.

An everyday example

A diagnostic tool may report a WDDM version alongside the adapter name and package information. These fields should not be compared as if they measured the same thing. The adapter identifies hardware, the package version identifies a software release, and the model version describes a supported operating-system interface relationship.

Reading the information in context

A higher model number is not an independent score of rendering speed, display quality, or application suitability. Operating-system release, feature device assistance, and workload requirements remain relevant. Use reference documentation for the exact feature being considered rather than treating the number as a universal recommendation. The library explains the terminology without distributing graphics components or changing system settings.

Display & Graphics

Note these before you change anything

Useful facts to have to hand while reading about the windows graphics model.

  • Current driver version and date from the adapter's Driver tab
  • Resolution, refresh rate and scaling for each monitor
  • Which port and cable each display uses
  • Any per-application graphics settings you changed
