Graphics APIs and device assistance

A graphics API gives applications a defined vocabulary for describing rendering or computation. It separates the program's requested operations from many of the hardware-specific details needed to execute them.

How the pieces connect

An API specification can evolve independently of the operating-system components and hardware that implement it. A computer may have runtime device assistance for an API family while exposing only a particular set of device capabilities. Feature levels, extensions, and supported interfaces help applications determine which operations are actually available through the selected adapter.

An everyday example

Two applications using the same graphics API can request very different capabilities. A simple interface and a demanding rendering workload do not place identical requirements on the hardware. An information tool showing an installed runtime version therefore does not, by itself, establish that every application written for that API family will have all the features it expects.

Reading the information in context

Package version numbers are separate from API version labels. Updating software can expose improvements supported by the underlying design, but it cannot create absent hardware units. Read application requirements alongside the device's documented capabilities. This page provides vocabulary rather than compatibility certification, and it does not run a browser-based graphics benchmark or inspect the reader's machine.

Display & Graphics

Note these before you change anything

Useful facts to have to hand while reading about graphics apis and device assistance.

  • Current driver version and date from the adapter's Driver tab
  • Resolution, refresh rate and scaling for each monitor
  • Which port and cable each display uses
  • Any per-application graphics settings you changed
